Six-pack of Niners-Focus on Precision

This small piece (20" x 16") will be constructed while the basics of precision quilting will be covered. The basics are many times forgotten but they are oh, so important. More experienced quilters may pick up a tip or two to increase their accuracy as well. In this class we’ll cover the following:
  • How to make fabrics behave to increase accuracy.
  • Review rotary cutting equipment and accurate rotary cutting.
  • Pin to keep intersections together.
  • Conquer that rascally 1/4” seam allowance.
  • Press (not iron) to increase precision.
  • Set blocks on point by cutting setting triangles with a nifty ruler.
  • Calculate how to successfully add pieced borders to a quilt.
  • Learn tips for structural quilting to keep every piece straight and true.
  • Stitch simple quilting patterns accurately using freezer paper templates.
Please note that quilting will be discussed in class, but binding with piping will not. It is a different class.

  • Background: 1 yd. (includes binding and backing fabric)
  • Features: 1 1/2” x 17” strip EACH of SIX fabrics plus (1) 1" x 6" piece for corners of pieced border...Don’t cut prior to class just make sure you have this much.
  • Thread to match background fabric for piecing (50 or 60 wt. cotton)
Equipment:
  • Pieces Be With You Six-pack of Niners pattern (may be purchased in class for $8)
  • 70/10 denim or universal needles for piecing (80/12 if you prefer)

  • Slotted throat plate for your machine (not single hole throat plate)
  • Seam ripper
  • Small scissors for clipping threads
  • Pins (.5mm shaft of any length)
  • Rotary cutter with a sharp blade
  • Cutting mat at least 18” x 24”...the green or grey ones are good
  • Acrylic rulers: 6” x 24” (or close to it), and others if you have them...Please look for rulers having thin lines with many breaks in them....others are less accurate
  • Felt pads for underneath the rulers so they don’t slip....other no-slip stickies are OK but make sure they’re not very thick
  • Marti Michell’s “Diagonal Set Triangle Ruler Small (3” to 9” Blocks)” available at quilt shops OR in class
  • Post-it notes, any size... to be used as a sewing guide
  • Masking tape (any width)
Irons and ironing boards will be needed, though not every student needs his/her own.

Homework:
Press fabric and apply one or two layers of spray starch to the wrong side (press after each application). (I like Fautless spray starch found at HyVee and Wal-Mart.)
