Piping Hot Curves-Macaroni
(full-day class)
***
Please note this description and supply list is different from the half-day version of this class. In this full-day version, students bring their own fabrics. In the half-day version, students work from a pre-cut kit.
***

29"x29" (9 blocks) OR 63"x49" (48 blocks), 6" blocks
Accent curves with piping! This technique is wonderful for traditional curved patterns and great for contemporary designs. In class, students will learn to make perfect piping and add that piping to curves such as Susan's macaroni block or traditional drunkard’s path blocks. Piping adds pizzazz! Quilting and finishing will be discussed. (additional $8 pattern fee per student OR $25 Piping Hot Curves book)
(Pattern is to be used in conjuction with class information and is not a stand-alone pattern. Piping Hot Curves book contains every detail taught in class plus 5 projects. Pattern is not available in shops. When this class is offered in a shop, each student needs the Piping Hot Curves book)

Susan will have the pattern, cording, some YLI #100 silk thread, and the Clover ball-point awl available for purchase in class.

Fabric choices:
I used one solid (black) fabric, many black/white prints, and six piping/corner stone fabrics. The bright piping between black and black/white prints gave the definition and contrast I wanted to see.
Please keep in mind that high contrast is needed for piping fabric so it will pop! Prints may hide piping, so consider stripes, solids, batiks, or tone-on-tone fabrics. A macaroni on a same-value background will work with piping between them, so traditional fabric decision-making is not applicable in this project. Simply make sure piping fabric is in contrast with other fabrics in the quilt!

Class organizer please note really HOT irons are essential!

Fabric requirements:
  • Fabric requirements are based on fabric 40”-44” wide.
  • You may bring scraps to learn the technique without starting a project.
  • Prints for backgrounds and macaroni: 48-block quilt: twelve fat eights OR six fat quarters OR three 1/2 yd pieces OR many different pieces; 9-block quilt: six pieces at least 7” x 14” or 1/2 yd
  • Black (backgrounds, macaroni, border 2): 48-block quilt: 2 yds; 9-block quilt: 1/2 yd
  • Sashing and borders 1 & 3 (not needed in class): 48-block quilt: 2 yds; 9-block quilt: 1 yd
  • Piping and corner stones: 48-block quilt: at least five different fat quarters; 9-block quilt: one fat quarter OR several smaller pieces
  • Binding (not needed in class): 48-block quilt: 1/2 yd; 9-block quilt: 1/4 yd
  • Backing & batting (not needed in class)
Supplies: (If class is held at a conference and sewing machines are provided, items marked with "*" are not needed. Please check to understand if a machine is provided.
  • Pattern fee in class $8 or Piping Hot Curves book for $25 (pattern available only in class)
  • Cording (1/16” diameter): 48-block quilt needs 20yds; 9-block quilt needs 5yds (may be purchased in class)
  • Freezer paper (just a few feet from the roll)
  • Thread to match (or coordinate with) piping and/or block fabrics OR invisible...A thin thread is preferrable such as YLI #100 silk, Superior Bottom Line, Aurifil 50 wt, or Mettler 60 wt. Instructor will have some YLI #100 available for purchase. Bring what you can find but a thin thread makes the technique easier.
  • 50 or 60 wt cotton thread for bobbin, neutral slightly contrasting piping
  • 50 or 60 wt cotton thread coordinating with piping fabrics
  • * Sewing machine, fresh needle, bobbin, bed extension (if you have one), sewing machine manual?. A machine with adjustable needle positions is desirable.
  • * Slotted needle plate for your machine (not single hole needle plate) If you have no idea what this is, you're probably OK. It came with your machine but some quilters change it to a single hole needle plate.
  • * Walking (or even-feed) foot if you have one
  • * Foot with a small groove in the bottom from toe to heel (highly recomended) for making piping OR zipper foot OR pintuck foot OR corded buttonhole foot (Pfaff plastic applique foot or narrow piping foot; Bernina foot #3 or #23; Viking foot C or mini piping foot; Janome beading foot)
  • * Open-toe foot ... important

  • Masking tape (any width)
  • Pencil for note taking
  • Bag for scraps/threads
  • Thin marker, pen or pencil for tracing shapes onto freezer paper
  • Iron, pressing surface (usually provided, check with class organizer) Please note many times classrooms are unable to support extra irons, so you may wish to leave yours at home.
  • Light (optional)
