Piping Hot Curves-Eye of the Piper

51" square or 25"x30"
Add piping to curves and avoid curved piecing! This technique is wonderful for traditional curved patterns and great for contemporary designs. In class, students will learn to make perfect piping and add it to the "Eye of the Piper" block. Piping adds pizzazz! Quilting and finishing will be discussed. (additional $8 pattern fee per student OR $25 Piping Hot Curves book)
(Pattern is to be used in conjuction with class information and is not a stand-alone pattern. Piping Hot Curves book contains every detail taught in class plus 5 projects. Pattern is not available in shops. When this class is offered in a shop, each student needs the Piping Hot Curves book)

The pattern, book, cording, YLI #100 silk thread, and the Clover ball-point awl will be available for purchase in class.

Fabric choices:
Please keep in mind that high contrast is needed for piping fabric so that it will pop! Prints may hide piping, so consider stripes, solids, batiks, or tone-on-tone fabrics. My sample showcases fabrics from Cherrywood Fabrics.

Instructions include quilts in two sizes. Large: 51"x 51", 35 blocks. Small 25"x 30", 15 blocks.

Fabric requirements:
Fabric requirements are based on fabric 40”-44” wide.

Fabric kits are available at www.CherrywoodFabrics.com or 888-298-0967. The small kit (Pharaoh's Eye) contains all fabric (8-step 1/2yd bundle and 4-step 1/4yd bundle) and cording needed. The large kit (Hidden Tikis) contains solid fabrics (8-step 1yd bundle) and cording needed but requires three 1/2yd pieces (or smaller pieces adding up to this amount) of black and whites to be added for piping fabric. These are the fabrics my quilts are made from. They require pre-washing before class.
  • If you'd like to bring scraps to just learn the technique without starting a project, that's fine.
  • Piping fabrics: large- three 1/2yd pieces; small- three 1/4yd pieces or smaller pieces adding up to these amounts
  • Blocks: large- eight 1/2yd pieces; small- eight 1/4yd pieces
  • Big triangle border for large only: two 1/2yd pieces AND two 1/4yd pieces
  • Plain border (not needed in class): large- 1/4yd or more to play it safe; small-1/4yd
  • Binding (not needed in class): large- 1/2yd; small- 3/8yd
  • Piping in binding (optional, not needed in class): large- 1/4yd; small-1/4yd
  • Backing (not needed in class): large-2 1/2yds; small- 1yd
Supplies (If class is held at a conference and sewing machines are provided, items marked with "*" are not needed. Please check to understand if a machine is provided.:
  • Pattern fee in class $8 or Piping Hot Curves book for $25 (pattern available only in class)
  • Cording (1/16” diameter): 42yds or 19yds (may be purchased in class)
  • Foundation papers: enough for 35 or 15 10"x 5 1/2" rectangles (special paper or plain paper or freezer paper)
  • Freezer paper
  • Thread to match (or coordinate with) piping and/or block fabrics OR invisible...A thin thread is preferrable such as YLI #100 silk (best), Superior Bottom Line, Aurifil 50 wt, or Mettler 60 wt. Instructor will have some YLI #100 available for purchase. Bring what you can find but a thin thread makes the technique easier.
  • 50 or 60 wt cotton thread for bobbin, neutral slightly contrasting piping
  • 50 or 60 wt cotton thread coordinating with piping fabrics
  • * Sewing machine, fresh needle, bobbin, bed extension (if you have one), sewing machine manual?. A machine with adjustable needle positions is desirable.
  • * Slotted needle plate for your machine (not single hole needle plate) If you have no idea what this is, you're probably OK. It came with your machine but some quilters change it to a single hole needle plate.
  • * Walking (or even-feed) foot if you have one
  • * Foot with a small groove in the bottom from toe to heel (highly recomended) for making piping OR zipper foot OR pintuck foot OR corded buttonhole foot (Pfaff plastic applique foot or narrow piping foot; Bernina foot #3 or #23; Viking foot C or mini piping foot; Janome beading foot)
  • * Open-toe foot ... important
  • * Extension cord
  • Rotary cutting mat...at least 18"and cutter (may be shared)
  • Paper scissors
  • Pins
  • Seam ripper
  • Stiletto (Clover’s ball point awl preferred...instructor will have some available)
  • Post-it note pad (about 10 sheets of any size as a guide on the machine)
  • Masking tape (any width)
  • Pencil for note taking
  • Bag for scraps/threads
  • Thin marker, pen or pencil for tracing shapes onto freezer paper
  • Iron, pressing surface (usually provided, check with class organizer) Please note many times classrooms are unable to support extra irons, so you may wish to leave yours at home.
