Carnival Star (25" x 25")
Print this page to help with your fabric selections.

Fabrics and thread: (fabrics based on width of 40” - 44” unless otherwise noted, a fat quarter measures 18”x20”) If fabric choices are a bit difficult, I suggest choosing fabrics in the order listed. Printing the "Carnival Star detail" page may also be helpful.
  • Carnival Star pattern by Pieces Be With You
  • Corners & prairie points: (4) different fat quarters OR one 1/2 yd’ piece for all corners to be the same (various plaids in sample, sets the mood of the piece)
  • Background: 3/4 yd. (purple in sample, includes binding fabric, best quite light or dark)
  • Center star: 1/8 yd. (pink/orange plaid in sample)
  • Center star outline: 1/8 yd. ( pink in sample)
  • Back star: 1/8 yd. (turquoise in sample, needs to stand out from background)
  • Pizza Wedge: 8” square (yellow/orange plaid in sample, just behing center star outline)
  • Pizza Wedge piping (optional): 1 1/4” x 25” bias strip (or strips adding up to this length) (dark pink in sample)
  • Center circle and circles at star tips: 1/8 yd. (orange in sample)
  • Backing: 27” x 27” piece (only for 2-day class)
  • Batting: 27” x 27” piece (only for 2-day class)
  • Thread to match background fabric for piecing (50 or 60 wt. cotton)
  • Thread to match center circle and star tip circles or monofilamentfor machine applique (only for 2-day class)
  • Thread to match piping fabric (50 or 60 wt. cotton or smaller)
  • Cording for piping (I like 1mm drapery cording. May be purchased in class for 25 cents)
  • Decorative thread for quilting (YLI 1000 denier silk. YLI Jeans Stitch, Sulky 12 wt, or size 12 pearl cotton are good options.) (only for 2-day class)
  • Decorative thread for circles at star points (only for 2-day class)
Equipment:
  • Sewing machine, fresh needles, bobbins, sewing machine manual
  • Bed extension for your machine if you have one
  • Open-toe foot for machine applique (optional but makes machine applique much easier) (only for 2-day class)
  • A foot with a small groove in the bottom to help make piping easier. If you don’t have one, a zipper foot is required to make piping. (Pfafies: the small clear plastic open-toe applique foot makes great piping. Bernina users: the #3 corded button hole foot is OK, but a foot #23 or #32 is even better.)
  • Seam ripper
  • Small scissors for clipping threads and cutting circles of fabric
  • Pins (I prefer 0.5mm shaft.)
  • Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and acrylic rulers
  • Freezer paper to make piecing and quilting templates (found in grocery stores)
  • Masking tape
  • Circle paper cutter if you have one
  • Post-it notes (3” squares work well.)
  • Irons and ironing boards (normally provided by class organizer but you may wish to bring your own)
  • Needles to accommodate decorative thread (I used 90/14 topstitch.) (only for 2-day class)
  • Embroidery needle to accommodate decorative thread for circles at star points
70/10 denim or universal needles for piecing (80/12 if you prefer) (only for 2-day class)
  • Paper punch if you have one (only for 2-day class)
  • Irons and ironing boards will be needed, though not every student needs his/her own.
Homework
  • Please note that homework is necessary. You must get the template patterns from the class organizer or from the Carnival Star pattern as these are not available on the web site. Please make freezer paper templates (6 each piece) before class.
