My Jewel Box Runneth Over
Retail Price: $8

This pattern is designed for the advanced beginner quilter who is ready to tackle a few new skills to produce a wonderful wallhanging. The possibilities for fabric choices are almost endless: fabrics of one color family, a gradation from one color to another, or an assortment of everything you love. Just make sure the background fabric is in high contrast to your jewel fabrics. Follow the pressing instructions and you’ll find that every seam in this quilt nests together nicely so piecing is a breeze! I’ve enclosed triangle papers you’ll need to assure perfect half-square triangles. While quilting and binding instructions are not included in this pattern, I do offer suggestions for different and interesting alternatives to the norm. Have a great time!

The following concepts are covered in this pattern. Instructions are written so these can be learned during the making of this wallhanging. (Previous rotary cutting and basic piecing experience is helpful.)
  • Using triangle papers to make perfect half-square triangles
  • Making prairie points (the half jewels protruding into the borders!)
  • Mitering multiple borders

Supply List (note: yardages are based on fabric at least 42” wide)
  • 2 yds background (all one piece is needed...not two 1 yd pieces)
  • 1 /4 yd (long or fat) of 8 different fabrics for jewels
  • 1/4 yd for thin border (or piece leftover jewel fabrics)
  • for muslin/green quilt, choose one jewel fabric to purchase 1 1/8 yds instead of only ¼ yd-- this is for the outermost border (the other seven ¼ yds are still needed)
  • thread
  • sticky labels or masking tape
  • sewing machine and rotary cutting equipment
What you’ll need to finish:
  • 3 /8 yd binding fabric
  • rectangular quilt: 1 3/8 yds OR square quilt: 1 1/8 yds backing fabric
  • batting
