Carnival Star

This pattern will step you through freezer
paper template piecing and appliqueing to
achieve this fun star with odd shapes. Foundation
piecing may be used if you’re already familiar
with that technique. The Piping Hot Curves
technique is included. (Binding instructions
are not included in this pattern, but if
you like the look of piping in the binding,
those instructions are written in detail
in Piping Hot Binding. |
Supply List: (fabrics based on width of 40”
- 44” unless otherwise noted, a fat quarter
measures 18” x 20”) Fabric suggestions are
included in pattern!
- Corners & prairie points: (4) different
fat quarters OR one 1/2 yd piece for all
corners to be the same
- Background: 3/4 yd. (includes binding fabric)
- Center star: 1/8 yd.
- Center star outline: 1/8 yd.
- Back star: 1/8 yd.
- Pizza Wedge: 8” square
- Pizza Wedge piping: 1 1/4” x 25” bias strip
(or strips adding up to this length)
- Center circle and circles at star tips: 1/8
yd.
- Backing and batting: 27” x 27” pieces
- Thread to match background fabric and piping
(50/3 or 60/2 wt. cotton)
- Thread to match center circle and star tip
circles or monofilament
- Small cording for piping (I like 1mm drapery
cording.)
- Decorative thread for quilting and appropriate
needles
- Decorative thread or silk ribbon for embellishing
circles at star tips
- Sewing machine, fresh needles, bobbin
- A foot with a small groove in the bottom
to help make piping easier
- Open-toe foot for machine applique (optional)
- Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and acrylic rulers
- Freezer paper to make piecing and quilting
templates (found in grocery stores)
- Masking tape
- Compass for drawing circles
- Post-It Notes®
